Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a raw material of chemicals, in high selectivity, by reacting formaldehyde with CO in the presence of a specific amount of chlorosulfonic acid, etc. as a catalyst, and without separating the reaction mixture, reacting with an alcohol.
CONSTITUTION: CO is made to react with formaldehyde or a fomaldehyde polymer producing formaldehyde by depolymerization, using 0.2W0.0001mol, per 1mol of the formaldehyde, of a catalyst selected from chlorosulfonic acid, fluoroantimonic acid, pyrosulfuric acid, boron trifluoride, and fluoroboric acid, under a pressure of 30W400kg/cm2 at 80W210°C, if necessary in an inert solvent. The unreacted CO is purged with air or N2 from the reaction system, and the reaction mixture is, without separating the catalyst, made to react with an alcohol at 80W160°C, and the product is distilled to obtain a glycolic acid ester.
