Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an accurate image of only the reflected wave from an observed object without the effect of the other reflected wave, by providing a sloped surface, which reflects the ultrasonic wave irradiated from the back surface, at the opposite part with respect to the back surfaces of ultrasonic wave transmitting and receiving elements in a supporting body. CONSTITUTION:A plurality of the ultrasonic wave transmitting and receiving elements 11 are arranged. The back surface of each element 11 is fixed so as to face the inner side of the supporting body 12. An absorbing body 13 is provided between the elements 11 and the supporting body 12. At the internal surface of the supporting body 12, the sloping surface 17 comprising a single plane is provided to reflect the ultrasonic wave irradiated from the back surfaces of the elements 11 in the direction opposite to a scanning direction 16. The slope angle theta of the sloping surface 17 is set so that the reflected wave is returned to a position separated by a pitch P of the group of the elements 11. Even though the ultrasonic wave irradiated from the back surfaces of the elements 11 are not sufficiently absorbed by the absorbing body 13, the reflected wave from the sloping surface 17 of the supporting body 12 is not returned to the oscillating elements 11.
