Abstract
PURPOSE: To eliminate a trace amount of salt contaminated into the oil layer readily, by separating a decomposed and then neutralized solution of a hydroperoxide into an oil and an aqueous layers, separating the aqueous layer, and further cooling the oil layer to remove the separated water.
CONSTITUTION: A reaction solution prepared by decomposing a hydroperoxide of an alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon having a tertiary carbon with sulfuric acid or sulfuric anhydride through the contact reaction, is neutralized with a basic substance in the presence of water, and the solution thus neutralized is separated into an oil and an aqueous layer, to remove the aqueous layer containing a neutralized salt. The separated oil layer is cooled to a temperature lower than that in the separating step mentioned above by 10°C or more, preferably 15°C or more, to separate the water contained in the oil layer. The resultant aqueous layer is further separated to remove a salt contained from the oil layer. Prior to the separating operation of the aqueous layer, the solution is preferably passed through a coaleser, e.g. a packing of glass fiber or stainless fiber, to make microscopic aqueous layer particles in the oil layer coalesce, and the separation is carried out rapidly and effectively.
