The coating material A containing bubbles is sent to a vacuum defoaming tank 9 through a line 15, and the defoamed material A' is introduced into the coating bath 7 through a line 16. The coating material in the bath is almost bubble-free, and the consequently, an optical fiber 5 having a bubble-free coating layer B can be obtained.
