Abstract

PURPOSE: A carcinostatic agent, having a selective inhibitory action on DNA synthesis of mammals with very low toxicity, and containing protocatechuic aldehyde. cyclic carbonate as an active constituent.
CONSTITUTION: A carcinostatic agent containing protocatechuic aldehyde.cyclic carbonate of formula I (referred to as PAC) as an active constituent. The mode of action of PAC is to have an inhibitory action on DNA synthesis, e.g. giantism of cells and nuclei, and act on cancer cells synthesizing DNA vigorously with the selective toxicity in the same way as the compound of formula II (common name: protocatechuic aldehyde, referred to as PA). The acute toxicity of PAC is about 1/8 that of PA, and the safe dose twice that of PA renders the carcinostatic agent clinically useful. The effective dose is 0.03W120mg/kg, preferably 0.1W60mg/kg, for oral administration and 0.001W20mg/kg for intravenous administration. The agent can be used extensively regardless of the dosage form if PAC is contained therein.
