Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a base material contg. little unnecessary impurities for an optical functional element of high performance by diffusing starting material for a trace component in a porous glass matrix and converting the matrix into transparent glass in an oxidizing gas and a dehydrating gas at a high temp. CONSTITUTION:Porous glass matrix 4 obtd. by sintering and depositing glass fine particles is placed in furnace core tube 11 heated to about 800-900 deg.C with heating element 10, and while being rotated with rotating device 9 matrix 4 is allowed to contact to starting material 12 for a trace component introduced into tube 11 through duct 15 with He gas to well diffuse material 12 in matrix 4. Valve 16 is then opened to introduce an oxidizing gas and a dehydrating gas, and the internal temp of tube 11 is raised to about 1,500 deg.C to convert matrix 4 into transparent glass. Thus, a base material contg. such a trace component for an optical functional element is obtd.
