Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce an impact-resistant thermoplastic resin, by partially coagulating a graft copolymer latex obtained by emulsion-polymerizing a vinyl monomer with a rubbery polymer latex, adding a monomer and a suspension stabilizer to the resulting partially coagulated latex and then suspension-polymerizing the mixture.
CONSTITUTION: Graft copolymerization is carried out by an emulsion polymerization method, between a crosslinked or uncrosslinked rubbery polymer such as natural rubber, styrene/butadiene rubber or acrylonitrile/butadiene rubber or a latex of the rubbery polymer and an aromatic vinyl monomer or a mixture thereof with a copolymerizable vinyl monomer. To the resulting graft copolymer latex is added a partial coagulant such as an acidic substance or an electrolyte to form a partially coagulated product. To this partially coagulated product are added a suspension stabilizer and an aromatic vinyl nomomer of a mixture thereof with a copolymerizable vinyl monomer. Then, the suspension is polymerized in water to produce a thermoplastic resin having excellent heat resistance.
