Abstract

PURPOSE: After the polymerization of the whole quantity of α-alkylstyrene and a part of vinyl cyanide, a rubber polymer, the rest of vinyl cyanide and styrene are added in a specific composition and the emulsion polymerization is conducted to produce the objective polymer with high heat resistance, high impact strength and good processability.
CONSTITUTION: When (A) 5W40pts.wt. of a rubber polymer such as polybutadiene latex and (B) 95W60pts. of monomer mixture of (i) 65W80wt% of α-alkylstyrene such as α-methylstyrene, (ii) 20W35% of vinyl cyanide such as acrylonitrile, and (iii) 0W10wt% of styrene are polymerized using a radical initiator such as potassium persulfate in an emulsion, the whole part of component (i) and a part of component (b) are polymerized first, then the rest of component (ii), component A and component (iii) are added to effect the polymerization, thus producing the objective polymer.
