Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a polyethylene type polymer having a wide MW distribution, excellent rigidity and excellent resistance to environmental stress cracking, by employing a catalyst consisting of a specified solid component and an organometallic compound component.
CONSTITUTION: To the surface of an inorganic support such as magnesium chloride is attached a titanium compound represented by the formula, wherein R is a C3W C20 sec. or tert. hydrocarbon group, X is a halogen and n is 0W1.5, pref., 0.3W0.8. This product is heated to about 50W300°C to decompose the titanium compound and thereby to form a solid product substantially free from OR groups. Next, a solid component is obtained by reacting the above solid product with an organomagnesium compound such as AlMg6(C2H5)3(n-C4H9)12 at a temperature of about -80W 150°C in an inert reaction medium. Then, ethylene is polymerized by use of a catalyst prepared by combining the above solid component with an organometallic compound such as triethylaluminum.
