Abstract

PURPOSE: To pepare a fungicide, cinnamosmolide, by total synthesis via seven intermediates including novel compounds, from a specific sequiterpene compound derived from easily available isodrimenin.
CONSTITUTION: Cinnamosmolide of formula V is prepared by (1) preparing the compound of formula II from the compound of formula 1 derived from isodrimenin, via trichloroethoxycarbonyl compound, an enone compound, a 6-hydroxy compound and a 6-acetoxy compound; (2) reacting the compound of formula II with an oxidizing agent (pref. Jones reagent), (3) converting the resulting carboxylic acid of formula III to the compound of formula IV by treating with an alkali such as NaOH and then with an acid such as dilute hydrochloric acid, and (4) acetylating the compound of formula IV e.g. with acetic anhydride/pyridine. Cinnamosmolide is a compound known as an extraction component of a specific plant, and is useful as a fungicide against cutaneous fungi.
