Abstract

PURPOSE: To form the titled member reproducing halftone clearly, having high resolution power and giving an image of high quality by using a photoconductive layer made of amorphous silicon contg. halogen atoms.
CONSTITUTION: On support 2 photoconductive layer 3 made of amorphous silicon contg. 1W40 atomic% halogen atoms, preferably F or Cl atoms is formed to manufacture electrophotographic image forming member 1. In the drawing, symbol 4 is the free surface of member 1. Layer 3 is formed by a glow discharge method or other method as follows: an Si forming gas and a starting material gas for introducing halogen are fed into a vacuum deposition chamber, and the above- mentioned amorphous silicon is deposited by glow discharge on support 2 placed in the chamber to form about 1W70μ thick layer 3. The photoconductive layer preferably contains not more than twice as much hydrogen as halogen atoms.
