Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the current efficiency of the titled cell by using heat insulating bricks having specified compressive strength and heat conductivity and combining the bricks with refractory bricks with a suitable structure at a specified area ratio.
CONSTITUTION: Heat insulating bricks 8 are laid on the inside of cell casing 1 opposite to the side of cathode carbon block 10, and refractory bricks 9 are laid so as to enclose the surface of the cell inside. Thus, a heat insulating layer is formed by the combination of bricks 8, 9. The cross-sectional area of bricks 8 is allowed to occupy 50W75% of the cross-sectional area of the layer including bricks 8, 9 at a longitudinal section perpendicular to the side wall of the cell. Accordingly, solidified electrolytic bath 13 can be maintained vertically over a long term. Bricks 8 to be used will be those of 50W100kg/cm2 compressive strength and 0.2W0.6kCal/ mhr°C heat conductivity.
