Abstract
PURPOSE: To decrease the deterioration with time in electric power consumption per unit product at the furnace bottom described in the title, by arranging a specific molded form contg. an oxide forming a compound oxide composed of a component which reacts with Al contained in the bath to form Al2O3 in the upper part or in intermediate part of the bricks of cathodic furnace bottom.
CONSTITUTION: In the cathodic furnace bottom of an Al electrolytic furnace using carbon cathode block 5 is arranged a molded form 11 at the boundary of bricks 9 and the block 5, or in the spaces between the bricks, or in both places. The molded form 11 contains 8wt%. or more of ZnO independently, or a mixture or solid soln. of ZnO with CoO, NiO, or FeO etc., which forms compound oxide contg. Al2O3 as a component on the surface by the reaction with Al contained in the electrolytic bath, and has an apparent porosity not higher than 30%. Or the molded form 11 painted with alumina sol is arranged. Hereby Al and the bath components such as cryolite, NaF, AlF3 etc. are inhibited from penetrating into the crack of the block 5, hence increase in heat conductivity and collapse of bricks 9 are prevented.
