Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce a sulfide compound or a nitro compound with hydrogen, with simple and effective means, by using a catalyst composed of a sulfide of a VIWVIII group metal of the periodic table supported on an alkali-treated carrier.
CONSTITUTION: A carrier such as silica, diatomaceous earth, activated charcoal, etc. is treated with an alkali such as sodium hydroxide, amine, etc. in a solvent such as water, alcohol, etc. The alkali-treated carrier is immersed in an aqueous solution of a chloride, hydroxide, etc. of a VIWVIII group metal of the periodic table (e.g. Co, Cr, etc.) and contacted with a sulfiding agent (e.g. hydrogen sulfide, ammonium sulfide, etc.) to obtain a catalyst. A sulfide compound (e.g. diphenyl sulfide) or a nitro compound (e.g. nitrobenzene) is reduced with hydrogen in a solvent such as alcohol in the presence of the catalyst prepared above. The catalyst has excellent handleability and high activity compared with the conventional powdery or pasty catalyst.
