Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a vinyl polymer, in a desired form, having a narrow range of particle size distribution, by starting polymerization after the application of a high speed shearing force to a polymerization system, which contains a portion of a vinyl monomer, and by adding the balance of the monomer when a specified degree of polymerization is attained.
CONSTITUTION: Water, containing a dispersing agent, a 5C or higher oil-soluble polymerization initiator and 40W90%, based on the total amount to be charged, of a vinyl monomer, are poured into a preliminary agitation vessel, in which they are preliminarily dispersed by mild agitation, and the vinyl monomer is dispersed into a minute droplet of 0.5W70μ, by the application of a high-speed shearing force of the order of 105W106min-1. Then polymerization is started at 5W80°C, after the dispersion is transferred into a polymerizer, and when the perliminarily charged monomer is polymerized to an extent of polymerization degree 30W50%, the balance of the monomer is added, continuously, separately in a plurality of times, or at once, to accomplish polymerization. Thus a spherical vinyl polymer, having uniform particle size of 2W70μ, is obtained.
