Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce titled polymer effectively within a short time, by emulsion- polymerizing a vinyl monomer in a specific condition by use of a redox initiator system.
CONSTITUTION: A monodispersible super-MW polymer is prepared within a relatively short time by using a decreased amount of a redox initiator system, e.g., hydroperoxide-ferrous sulfate, glucose-sodium pyrophosphate, thereby to reduce the amount of radicals generated and on the other hand, employing a large amount of an emulsifier thereby to increase the amount of micelles and increase the rate of polymerization. Namely, there are mixed together 100pts.wt. vinyl monomer, e.g., styrene, methyl methacrylate, 0.001W0.2pt.wt. redox initiator system (calculated as hydroperoxide) and 3W50pts.wt. emulsifier. The resulting mixture is emuslion- polymerized at -20W70°C to form a monodispersible super-MW polymer, MW ≥5,000,000.
