Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a metallic hydride having a high absorption ratio without reguriing a cooler, by feeding a hydrogen gas generated from liquid hydrogen to a specific metal or alloy for a metallic hydride and simultaneously cooling the metal or alloy so that they are hydrogenated.
CONSTITUTION: The sample holder 7 charged with the metal or alloy 12 e.g., MmNi5 (Mm is Misch metal), FeTi, etc. for a metallic hydride, showing a dissociation pressure and dissociation temperature in a range from near room temperature to not higher than ice point, is heated by the heater 8, degassed by the vacuum pump 9, and cooled by air. A hydrogen gas at about -250°C obtained by vaporizing liquid hydrogen in the bomb 10 is fed through the hydrogen feed pipe 11 to the holder 7. The hydrogen gas is sent through the porous part of a sintered metal having hole diameters 20W40μ set at the end 13 of the feed pipe 11 so that the alloy 12 is hydrogenated while being cooled. Thus, blending of oxygen having an action of catalyst poison is suppressed and the reduction in hydrogen absorbing power of the alloy can be prevented.
