Abstract
PURPOSE: To allow an adequate vol. of H2 to be cheaply and easily absorbed in a misch metal-Ni alloy by placing the alloy in a reactor; sealing H2 in the reactor with heating; cooling and reevacuating the reactor to activate the alloy; and introducing H2 under specified conditions.
CONSTITUTION: Misch metal is obtd. by adding about 5% Fe and about 2% Mg, Al,Si, etc. to a mixt. of light rare earth elements such as Ce and La. This misch metal and Ni are mixed in a ratio of 1:5.5W1:4.5, e.g. MmNi5 and arc-melted. The resulting alloy is placed in a reactor. After sealing H2 in the reactor with heating, the reactor is cooled and reevacuated to activate the alloy. H2 is then introduced into the reactor at a H2 gas press. above 1kg/cm2 and a temp. above 10°C to form the alloy hydride. This alloy is equal to a conventional lanthanum-Ni alloy in H2 absorbing power, and the purity of H2 used exerts no influence on the absorbing power. Activation, H2 absorption and H2 emission are carried out rapidly.
