Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an inexpensive and excellent hydrogen storing material by using a quaternary alloy with a specific compositon in which lanthanum of a lanthanum-nickel alloy is partially substituted by calcium and also nickel is pratially substituted by aluminum.
CONSTITUTION: In a new quaternary alloy with the formula Ca1-XLaXNi5-YAlY (where X<1 and Y<5), the value of Y should be in the range of 0.2W0.4 and the value of X should be 0.5 or less. A mixture of calcium powder, lanthanum chips, granular nickel, and aluminum chips, each having a purity of 99% or more, is prepared in accordance with the composition as mentioned above and then alloyed by a known arc melt method in an atmosphere of argon. The alloy thus obtained has a great hydrogen storing performance because it is capable of forming hydride even at room temperature and also the alloy is capable of giving off hydrogen simple by raising or lowering its temperature at will.
