Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent electric shock accident even under the adverse condition of the degradation in insulation by incorporating a start switch into the conventional electric shock preventing device and applying a no-load voltage across the output terminals of the welding power source by the start signal.
CONSTITUTION: The welder and diver who entered the chamber 2 inside from an underwater elevator hold a torch 19 and turn ON a start switch 20 while making communication with a supporting ship 1. Thereupon, a no-load voltage of ≤25V is applied by this start signal control to the output terminals of the electric shock preventing device of a power source 7 via control cables 17', 17 and a repeater box 15. When the welder abuts the torch 19 on the weld zone 5, said contact voltage or the change amount in current is detected via a control unit 9 which in turn starts welding power source 7 to apply arc voltage to the terminals, whereby the welding is accomplished. When the welding is finished, the welding power source is turned OFF with a delay of a predetermined time.
