Abstract
PURPOSE:To unnecessitate a time-calibrating circuit element by a method wherein charge-detecting electrodes of prescribed shapes are placed in a specified condition and connected to an electric processing circuit discriminating the deflection position through the comparison of two electrical input signals so that one charged ink droplet is detected simultaneously. CONSTITUTION:Between deflecting electrodes 7 and a gutter 9, the two charge- detecting electrodes 10a and 10b are placed on the opposite sides of a plane containing the paths (single-dotted lines) of deflected ink droplets and are connected to the electric processing circuit 14. Positively charged ink droplets are generated during a phase-retrieving operation, while negatively charged ink droplets are generated during a recording operation and they pass through the gap between the electrodes 10a, 10b. When the positively charged ink droplets pass through the gap between the electrodes 10a, 10b, the inputs and outputs S1-S7 of the circuit elements in the processing circuit 14 change. When the ink droplet flies along a reference path traversing both the electrodes 10a, 10b over the same length, both the outputs S5 and S6 remain at low levels so that whether or not the droplet is passing along the reference path can be discriminated on the basis of the output S7.
