Abstract

PURPOSE:To perform measurement of ash in paper and the like by a simple constitution, with ease and without any error by a method wherein the energy of radiant X rays and reflected X rays is adjusted through adjustment of the anble of radiation of the X rays on a target for generating the reflected X rays and thereby the influence of constituents having different composition is removed. CONSTITUTION:The radiant X rays from an X-ray tube 1 are absorbed by the ash such as calcium carbonate, including kaolin and talc, in a substance 2 to be measured, such as paper, and are reflected by a prescribed target material 6. The secondary radiant X rays by this reflection are transmitted through the substance to be measured and detected by a detector 3. On the occasion, when the angle of radiation from the X-ray tube 1 is adjusted, the difference in the absorption factor of the calcium carbonate whose absorption coefficient is sharply changed by the energy of X rays is offset by the energy of the radiant and reflected X rays which hold apparently the absorption edge of the absorption factor of the calcium corbonate from both edge thereof. Therefore, the influence of the constituents having different composition is removed and the measurement of the amount of ash by the X rays can be performed by the simple constitution, with ease and without any error.
