Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent the deposition of glass particles of small bulk density and prepare a base material of good quality for an optical fiber, by flowing a gas through a tapered hollow glass tube provided around a starting member in depositing fine glass particles through the hydrolysis of a raw material gas fed from a burner on the starting member. CONSTITUTION:A gas is made to flow through a hollow glass tube 15 having a tapered part 17 at the tip and a slit or hole 18 near the tip opening in the direction of arrows 16 and 16''. The gas is then made to offset the inflow of a combustion gas 5 from a burner 1 (arrow 5'') and flow out of the hole 18 in the direction of arrows 16' and 16''. After collision of the gas flow from the burner 1 with the growing end of a porous glass base material 2, the gas flows along the tapered part 17 in the direction of arrow 5' and is discharged in the direction of arrow 14. The growing end of the base material 2 is placed at a distance l0 from the bottom of the part 17 to deposite fine particles of glass, and a starting part 4 is moved in the direction of arrow 7 while rotated in the direction of arrow 8. Thus, a porous glass base material having almost uniform outside diameter and bulk density can be stably prepared to give an optical fiber having uniform band characteristics.
