Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a catalytic effect equivalent to or higher than that of high-cost cobalt chloride and to reduce the cost by using a mixture in which a single monovalant copper salt and a single divalent nickel salt are mixed in a specific proportion. CONSTITUTION:A single univalent copper salt such as cuprous oxide or cuprous sulfide and a single divalent nickel salt such as nickel monooxide or nickel hydroxide are mixed to a proportion of 0.3-2.5 molar ratio of Ni/Cu thereby forming a catalyst. This catalyst is used to decompose hypochlorite in its aqueous solution into Cl<-> and O2. By selection of cpds. having specific valency, the catalyst exhibits their synergistic effect and therefore has a catalytic performance equal to or higher than that of conventional high-cost cobalt chloride and is less expensive.
