Abstract
A magnetic composition has the formula [TO(NH)]m.nNH3 or [TO(NH)]2D.nNH3 where T includes Fe+++ and may include Al+++ or Cr+++, m is the monovalent ion of Li, Na, K, Cu, Ag or Ti, D is the divalent ion of Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg, Mn, Fe, Co or Ni, n is any number including zero. The composition, which is a ferrospinel with half the oxygen replaced by (NH) is made by reacting liquid ammonia with an oxyhalogenide of T in the presence of the cation M or D. When the composition contains ammonia it may be driven off by pyrolysis.
