Abstract

Water is sterilized by the addition thereto of a stabilized microbicidal composition comprising an ascorbic acid, or salt or ester thereof, having hydroxyl groups at carbon atom positions 2 and 3 of the ascorbyl radical and a double bond between said two carbon atoms and traces of Cu++ ions to catalyse the autoxidation of ascorbic acid stabilized by ammonium hydroxide, an ammonium salt or a water-soluble amine capable of forming a complex having a log stability constant of 3 to 14 with the Cu++ ions.
