Abstract

PURPOSE:To eliminate any unevenness of the brightness distribution over the surface of a fluorescent tube by disposing plural pairs of electrodes, each pair of which are located opposite to one another, at the ends of the tube. CONSTITUTION:The inner surface of a glass tube 1 is homogeneously lined with a luminescent body 2, and the glass tube 1 is charged with appropriate proportions of mercury vapor and an inert gas. The first pair of electrodes 5A and 5B, and the second pair of electrodes 9A and 9B are placed at the ends of the glass tube 1, and each pair of electrodes is disposed opposite to one another. Each of these electrodes is bridged by a tungsten filament 8 which is covered with an electron-discharging substance. The discharge between the first pair of electrodes 5A and 5B, and the discharge between the second pair of electrodes 9A and 9B are carried out independently at parallel levels to one another.
