Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:The titled compound shown by the formula I [X is R(alkyl); RO(alkoxy), alkylphenyl, etc., R is 3W8C straight-chain alkyl].
EXAMPLE: 4-n-Hexyloxybenzoic acid 3',5'-dicyanophenyl ester.
USE: An additve for a liquid crystal composition having high dielectric anisotropy. When it is added to a nematic liquid crystal composition, negative or positive dielectric anisotropy is made higher positive value, and a voltage of threshold is reduced, the addition is effective in the drive of low voltage. The compound has improved compatibility with other liquid crystal and can be mixed with it uniformly.
PROCESS: A compound shown by the formula II is debrominated in the presence of AlCl3 as a catalyst in a solvent of benzene under heating to give a compound shown by the formula III. This compound is cyanized to give a compound shown by the formula IV, which is reacted with a compound shown by the formula VI obtained from a compound shown by the formula V and SOCl2, to give the titled compound shown by the formula I.
