Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide a nematic liquid crystal compsn. with low threshold voltage at low temp., short responding time and superior characteristics esp. at low temp. by mixing a phenylcyclohexane type liquid crystal with a biphenyl type liquid crystal and a biphenylcyclohexane type liquid crystal.
CONSTITUTION: A cpd. of formula I, e.g. p-propyl-cyclohexyl-p'-cyanobenzene is mixed with a cpd. of formula II, e.g. p-heptyl-p'-cyanobiphenyl and a cpe. of formula III, e.g. p-heptyl-cyclohexyl-p'-cyanobiphenyl to provide a liquid crystal compsn. Other components may be added to the compsn. The amt. of the cpd. of formula III contained is pref. 5W15 wt%. This compsn. is a nematic liquid crystal compsn. with positive dielectric anisotropy, and it is applicable to a twist nematic liquid crystal display cell, a guest-host effect cell using dichroism of coloring matter or other field effect type cell.
