Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide the titled liquid crystal compsn. which exhibits characteristics suitable as a liquid crystal for time division driving, by a method wherein a specified fluorine-contg. org. compd. derived from 4-fluorophenol is blended with a nematic liquid crystal compd. having positive dielectric anisotropy.
CONSTITUTION: A trans-4-alkylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid chlorine is reacted with 4-fluorophenol in a basic solvent such as pyridine to obtain a compd. of formula I (wherein R is 1W10C alkyl). This compd. is blended with at least one nematic liquid compd. having positive dielectric anisotropy (e.g. a compd. of formula II or III wherein R1 is 1W10C alkyl, alkoxy) to produce the desired liquid crystal compsn. This liquid crystal compsn. exhibits excellent characteristics such as extremely low C-N transition temperature, low viscosity, less variation in physical properties due to temperature change and availability of low threshold voltage.
