Abstract

PURPOSE: In an engine which a part of its cylinders do not work during a light load thereof wherein exhaust gas is recirculated into stopped cylinder(s), to prevent damage of a cylinder bore wall due to carbon by increasing tensile force of a piston ring of said stopped cylinder(s).
CONSTITUTION: Cylinders #1W#3 which work constantly and ones #4W#6 which rest when load is light are separated by a shut-off valve 3, and an exhaust gas recirculating valve 4 is opened when the number of cylinders in operation is reduced to recirculate exhaust gas to resting cylinders through a recirculation passage 5. A top ring 12 and the second ring 13 are fitted between a piston 10 of each cylinder and a cylinder bore wall 11a, and one of the rings 12, 13 of resting cylinders #4W#6 is pressed against the wall by a tensile strength which is larger than that of a working cylinder. Being thus constituted, carbon in the exhaust gas conducted into a combustion chamber can be easily scraped off.
