Abstract
PURPOSE: To detect the freezing of a protecting pipe by a method wherein a resistor with a large thermal coefficient is arranged in the protecting pipe, the latter is fitted in a cooling water tank and the change in the terminal voltage of the resistor when being electrified from a constant-current source is measured.
CONSTITUTION: A freezing-detecting element 4 is formed by arranging the resistor 7 having a large thermal coefficient and being superior in the corrosion resistance, such as Ni and Pt, within the metal protecting pipe 6 and this element is arranged in the cooling water 2 in the cooling-water tank 1 nearly in parallel to a cooling pipe 3 which returns back a coolant (the sign 5 is a cooled part). Then, the resistor 7 of the element 4 is electrified from the constant current source and the voltage between both ends thereof is measured, while the voltage V1 just after the electrification is subtracted from the voltage V2 after the passage of a prescribed time T. When the value is lower than the set value, the inside of the protecting pipe 6 is determined to be frozen. In addition, the above set time T is set at a value shorter than that required for the melting of the whole ice when the entire part inside the protecting pipe is frozen and the electrification is applied thereto.
