Abstract
PURPOSE:To enhance the utilization ratio of an active material at high-rate-discharge and lengthen the life of a battery by packing the active material into a feltlike porous metal body in such a manner that the surface of the packed body is made dense and the inner part of that is made thin, and enhancing gas venting from the center of the electrode. CONSTITUTION:An active material, for example, a zinc active-material 2 is packed into a feltlike porous iron body with a porosity of 88% which is made of iron fibers 1 which are irregularly intertwined each other, thus an electrode being made. At this point, the active material 2 is packed in such a manner that the surface of the porous body becomes dense and the inner part of that becomes thin, and thus a space 3 is formed in the center of the porous body. For instance, a toothpastelike paste made of zinc oxide or the like is applied to the surfaces of the feltlike porous iron body, and 50% of the water contained in the paste is removed by drying it, before a metal-zinc paste is applied to the surfaces of the porous iron body and dried, thus a zinc electrode being formed. Besides, the feltlike porous metal body is preferred to be sintered before it is filled with the active material, in order ro connect the fibers 1 to each other, thereby the electric resistance of the electrode can being reduced.
