Abstract

PURPOSE: To close the second intake valve in a reliable manner, by actuating a mechanism for stopping operation of the second intake valve by the hydraulic pressure of oil supplied from an accumulator in an engine having the first and the second intake valves in its combustion chamber.
CONSTITUTION: The first intake system consisting of the first throttle valve 42, the first intake port 12, the first intake valve 16, etc. and the second intake system consisting of the second throttle valve 48, the second intake port 14, the second intake valve 18, etc. are connected to a combustion chamber 10. The first intake valve 16 is associated with the first driving means 52 operated all the time for opening and closing the valve 16. Similarly, the second intake valve 18 is associated with the second driving means 68, to which lubricating oil from a hydraulic pump 138 is supplied via an accumulator 136 for keeping the hydraulic pressure constant and a solenoid valve 132 for opening and closing the second intake valve 18 by the aid of a control circuit 154, so as to close the second intake valve 18 during low-load operation of engine.
