Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain light oil of good quality in good yields by carying out the removal of sulfur, nitrogen and metals present in residual oil efficiently, by a method wherein topped crude is contacted with an amorphous clay mineral in two stages.
CONSTITUTION: Topped crude is introduced into a metal-removing tower 1 which is charged with an amorphous clay mineral (e.g. "Kanuma" clay), and partially cracked at a temp. of 450W550°C under normal pressures to remove organometallic compd. and to obtain an oil which is free from metals. The metal-free oil is supplied to a reaction tower 2 which is charged with the amorphous clay mineral, and catalytically cracked at a temp. of 450W550°C under normal pressures to carry out simultaneously desulfurization and denitrification and at the same time to convert the oil to light oil. The resulting oil is supplied to a flash column 3 where the oil is divided into a relatively large amount of light oil and a small amount of heavy oil. The heavy oil is recycled to the reaction tower 2. Gas and gas oil obtd. from the top of the metal-removing tower 1 and the reaction tower 2 and the light oil obtd. from the flash column 3, are subjected to fractional distillation in a fractionating column 4 to obtain various fuels.
