Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate and extract the titled compounds useful as agricultural chemicals or intermediates for medicines, by adjusting the pH of an aqueous solution containing a bis(hydroxyphenyl)acetic acid and a hydroxymandelic acid in two stages successively, and extacting the compounds with an extracting agent, e.g. an ether, at the respective pH values.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution containing a bis(hydroxyhenyl)acetic acid expressed by formula I (R1 and R2 are Hs, halogens, alkyls, alkoxyls,etc.) and a hydroxymandelic acid expressed by formula II, is adjusted to pH 4.5W7 by the addition of an alkali, e.g. an alkali hydroxide. The compound expressed by formula I is separated by extraction from the aqueous solution mentioned above, with an ether, e.g. diethyl ether or isopropyl ether, or an acetic ester, e.g. methyl acetate, as an extracting agent. Then an acid is added to adjust the extraction residue to pH 0.5W2, to give the compound expressed by formula II. Preferably, an extracting agent, e.g. an ether or acetic ester, is used to extract and isolate the compound of formula II after adjusting the pH of the extraction residue.
