Abstract
PURPOSE: To facilitate the separation and recovery of a crystallization solvent in the preparation of the titled compound useful as a flame retardant by the reaction of triallyl isocyanurate with bromine in the presence of a halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon, by using a ≥5C saturated hydrocarbon as a crystallization solvent.
CONSTITUTION: Triallyl isocyanurate of formula I is reacted with bromine using a halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon such as dichloromethane, carbon tetrachloride, etc. as a reaction solvent, and the resulting reaction mixture containing tris (2,3- dibromopropyl) isocyanurate of formula II is mixed with a ≥5C saturated apliphatic hydrocarbon such as heptane, octane, etc. as a crystallization solvent which is a poor solvent of the compound of formula II. The objective compound is crystallized and separated by this process. The crystallization solvent does not form an azeotropic mixture with the reaction solvent, and consequently is recorverd easily by distillation. By selecting a proper crystallization solvent, it can be used as a mixture with the reaction solvent to crystallize and separate the objective compound effectively during the reaction. The recorvered solvent mixture can be used as it is to the reaction.
