Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent intergranular cracking defects from occuring in castings by decreasing the S of impurities in 9% Ni steel for cryogenic materials and adding the specific heat treatment to the steel castings thereof. CONSTITUTION:The S content in so-called 9% Ni steel cntg. 0.01-0.10% C, < 0.15% Si, <0.90% Mn, 8.5-12.0% Ni, and 0.15-0.50% in total of one or two kinds of Mo and W is decreased to <=0.005%. Or if S is <=0.010%, Mg is added at 0.005-0.020% or Ca is added at <=1/2 the S content. Cryogenic materials are cast by this steel and if freezing is completed, knock-out is immediately performed and the casting is quenched down to the temperature just above the bainite transformation point. The diffusion of the contained S to the grain boundaries is suppressed by this treatment, and mechanical properties are improved by cracking prevention and crystal fining. Next, the slow cooling from the bainite transformation initiation temperature down to 250 deg.C is performed under the conditions of satisfying tV<1/2 894 [(t) is the maximum wall thickness mm. of casting, and V is the rate of cooling deg.C/hr]. The cracking of the casting may be prevented perfectly.
