Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce fuel oil efficiently, by a method wherein a specified multi- component molten salt is reacted with coal (or a coal-like material) under hydrogen pressure at an elevated temperature.
CONSTITUTION: 1W300wt% of a binary molten salt composed of 10W90mol% of a zinc halide selected from ZnCl2, ZnBr2 and ZnI2 and 90W10mol% of a curprous halide, or a multi-component molten salt obtd. by adding 1W50mol% of a metal halide contg. corresponding halogen atom to said binary molten salt, is mixed with coal having a particle size of 100W200mesh or a coallike material such as petroleum pitch, solvent-refined coal or coal pitch. The mixt. is subjected to a reaction in the presence of absence of a solvent such as tetralin or a hydrogenated. arom. oil, under a hydrogen pressure of 10W500kg/cm2 and at a temp. of 300W 500°C, to produce hydrocarbon gas and a liquid product. Said liquid product is divided into an oil which is soluble in hexane or pentane and asphaltene which is soluble in benzene.
