Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a liquefied substance, useful as a light fuel oil, chemical raw material, etc., and having a high fluidity, by adding a specific amount of an iron component to coal, heat-treating the mixture in the presence of hydrogen under specific high temperature conditions to suppress the formation of methane gas, etc. in a short reaction time.
CONSTITUTION: Coal, e.g. bituminous coal, is liquefied in the presence of hydrogen. In the process, the coal is pulverized in an inert gas stream, e.g. nitrogen, and an iron component, e.g. ferrous chloride, in an amount of 1.0pt.wt. or more, calculated as the weight of iron, is added to 100pts.wt. coal. The resultant coal mixture is then fed to an autoclave and heated at a temperature in the range of 600W900°C for 1.0sec to 10min under hydrogen pressue to liquefy the coal at a high speed. Preferably, the partial hydrogen pressure in the liquefying reaction is in the range of 10W200atm, and the iron component is impregnated into the coal with an oil obtd. by the cracking of coal.
