Abstract

A process for converting to gasoline a predominantly polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbonaceous feedstock which is heavier than gasoline comprises contacting said feedstock in the presence of hydrogen with molten zinc chloride or molten zinc bromide or a mixture thereof as a catalyst in a hydrocracking zone under conditions of intimate contact at elevated temperature and pressure to effect hydrocracking of said feedstock and maintaining an amount of the molten metal salt in said hydrocracking zone which is in excess of that required to react stoichiometrically with any nitrogen or sulphur compounds in said feedstock by an amount at least equal to 15% by weight of the feedstock in said hydrocracking zone. The feedstock may be coal or an extract or derivative thereof, or crude mineral, shale or tar sand oil or high-boiling treated or untreated fractions thereof. The process may be operated between 500 DEG F. and 875 DEG F. at 500 to 10,000 p.s.i.g. pressure, with a LHSV of 0.25 to 4.20 and a hydrogen-to-feedstock ratio of 5 to 50 SCF/lb.
