Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain mullite useful as refractory starting material or an Al alloy, high molar ratio sodium silicate and a high alumina material by adding a specified amount of an NaOH soln. to calcined and pulverized clays followed by pressurization.
CONSTITUTION: Clays such as kaolinite and halloysite or clays-contg. starting material such as diaspore, white bauxite or aluminous shale is calcined at 1,000W 1,300°C and pulverized, and an NaOH soln. of ≥30% concn. is added so that the ratio of SiO2:Na2O is adjusted to 2:1 or more, preferably about 3 to about 2/3 of silicic acid contained. The soln.-added pulverized material is then pressurized at ≥130°C in an autoclave and filtered to obtain molar ratio sodium silicate having an SiO2/Na2O molar ratio of ≥2 or about 3 as well as muillite (3Al2O3.2SiO2) or a mullite-contg. high alumina material as the residue.
