Abstract

A binder partic suitable for making easily worked concretes but moe refractory than conventional concrete consists of 39.5-53% cement, pref. calcium aluminate cement, 43-60% high-purity, non-expanding clay, pref. kaolin, and 0.5-4% additives. The additives. are wetting and deflocculating agents, e.g. alkali metal salts of phosphoric and silicic acids, and salts of some organic acids. Up to half the conventional quantity of water is used to make up the concrete using solid aggregate up to 10mm size or expanded aggregate up to 20mm. The low lime content of the binder, and the low water content of the mix give high density and refractoriness, though enough lime is present to encourage mullite and corundum formation.
