Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a high-thickness, nontempered, high-tensile steel having excellent low temperature toughness and antiweld cracking property by a method wherein a steel material having a specific composition is heated at a specified temperature, rolled to a specified accumultaion reduction factor at a specified temperature, and is finished into a specified thickness.
CONSTITUTION: A steel material consists of C: 0.005W0.04%, Si: 0.5% or less, Mn: 2W2.5%, Nb: 0.01W0.15%, Ti: 0.004W0.03%, Al: 0.005W0.06% as essential components, at least one of Ca: 0.0005W0.005%, REM: 0.0005W0.20%, and at least one of essential components selected from Cu: 0.5% or less, Cr: 0.5% or less, Mo: 0.5% or less, V: 0.15% or less, B: 0.003% or less with the remaining Fe and impurities. The steel composition further specifies that S in the impurities is less than 0.006%, the amount of Ca and/or REM and S is related by the formula I, and the value of PCM calculated by the formula II is less than 0.2%. Such steel material is heated at a temperature betwen 1,100 and 1,280°C, is rolled to 60% or more of accumulation reduction factor below 980°C and at finishing temperature of 900°C or less, and is finished into a plate of 25mm thick or more.
