Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a compound useful as a flame-retardant in a powdery form desirable for use in high yield, by reacting a pentaerythritol with POCl3 in the presence of a tertiary amine and a solvent in a specific proportion, and pouring the reaction mixture into water.
CONSTITUTION: Pentaerythritol or dipentaerythritol or both are reacted with POCl3 in the presence of 1.15W30mol a tertiary amine per mole of HCl generated by the reaction and 0.03W1.25mol an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent per mole the tertiary amine to give a compound useful as a flame-retardant for a rubber or plastic composition. The reaction product is then poured into 2W100pts.wt. per 1pt.wt. the tertiary amine to give the product in the form of fine powder in high yield.
