Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a hot melt-type cationic resin, suitable for treatment of paper and fiber and as an adhesive, etc., by the polycondensation of aminoalkylated phenol and urea with formaldehyde.
CONSTITUTION: An aminoalkylated product of formula I or II (wherein R1 and R2 are each 1W2C alkyl) is prepared by Mannich reaction of phenol, formalin and a dialkylamine. The reaction product is reacted with 0.5W1.2mol of urea per mol of the aminoalkylated phenol and with formaldehyde in mol equal to the tolal mol of the phenol and urea, and then further reacted with addition of hydrogen chloride, and cooled, to obtain an aqueous emulsion or solution. A thermoplastic hot melt-type cationic resin is obtained, by heating and dehydrating the emulsion or solution.
