Abstract

1446244 Phenolic resin binder for fibre boards SOC ITALIANA RESIN SIR SpA 7 May 1974 [11 May 1973] 20152/74 Heading C3R [Also in Division D1] A process for preparing a fibre board comprises spraying an aqueous solution of a modified phenolic resin having a dry matter content of from 15 to 20% by weight on to mineral wool fibres in the form of a mattress so as to fix therein an amount of dry resin of from 4 to 6% by weight with respect to the weight of the fibres, and heating the resultant article to 250‹ to 300‹ C., said aqueous solution being prepared by diluting with water a solution of modified phenolic resin obtained by: (a) reacting phenol and HCHO in a molar ratio of from 1 : 1 to 1 : 2À5 in the presence of a basic catalyst in an aqueous medium at a temperature of from 30‹ to 70‹ C. until the free HCHO content equals 7 to 9% of the reaction mass; (b) reacting the resulting product with urea in an aqueous medium in a molar ratio of urea to free HCHO of from 1 : 0À8 to 1 : 2À3 at a temperature of from 30‹ to 90‹ C. until the free HCHO content is less than 3% by weight.
