Abstract

PURPOSE: Urea is added to a reaction mixture from a phenol and formaldehyde in the presence of an alkali catalyst and made to react to produce a phenolic resin with high solubility in water and excellent plasticity.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of 1 mole of a phenol and 1.0-2.0 moles of formaldehyde is incorporated with an alkali catalyst and adjusted in pH to 7.0W9.5. The first stage reaction of the mixture is conducted under reflux for 20W40 min and 0.2W 0.6 mole, per mole of the phenol, of urea is added to the reaction mixture and refluxed under heating for 20W40 min for second stage reaction.
EFFECT: A cured product of high miscibility with water and excellent plasticity is obtained.
USE: Varnish for decorative and laminated boards.
