Abstract

PURPOSE: A reaction product from halogenated styrene and phenol is made to react with phosphate ester with a specific structure and formaldehyde in the presence of an alkaline catalyst to give said water-soluble resin with high flame retardancy.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A styrene adduct resulting from reaction between (a) a halogenated styrene of formula I (X is Cl, Br) and (b) a phenol in the presence of (c) an acidic catalyst as p-toluenesulfonic acid is made to react with (B) a phosphate ester of formula II and (C) an formaldehyde source with 45W80wt% formaldehyde concentration in the presence of (D) an alkaline catalyst as ammonia or triethylamine, wherein the molar ratios of the components are as follows: a/b= 0.1W0.4, B/b=0.01W0.2, (a+B)/b=0.11W0.5.
USE: Said resin is suitably used to produce laminates.
