Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a low-viscosity, low-foaming polymer latex by emulsion-polymerizing a vinyl monomer or a conjugated diolefin monomer in the presence of an alkyl vinyl ether/maleic acid derivative alternating copolymer.
CONSTITUTION: A vinyl monomer or a conjugated diolefin monomer is emulsion- polymerized in the presence of an emulsifier which is an alternating lower copolymer represented by the formula, wherein R is a 1W20C alkyl, X and Y are each H, an alkali metal, an ammonium ion, amino or alkyl, an average number of repetition, n, is 3W10 when at least one of an alkyl vinyl ether component and a maleic acid derivative component in the structural unit is bulky and n is 11 W several tens when neither components is bulky, or in the presence of a combination of the alternating lower copolymer and an ethylene oxide-added nonionic surfactant having an HLB of 17.0W18.5. Examples of the ethylene oxide-added nonionic surfactant include polyoxyethylene fatty acid esters, etc.
